View Full Version : Is this Normal?

My cyclone has a bunch of dust build-up in the top of it...Any idea why? System is about 3 years old, only gets occasional use. There is hardly anything in the filter clean-out.

It is a dead space that is not really needed. Mine has it and I ignore it because my unit is hidden in a closet. I recall seeing a post where someone has caulked the seam to prevent dust from entering that area.
The same thing occurs on a much smaller scale where the PVC meets the inlet chute. Notice the small ring of dust in the 2nd picture. It is also harmless. The worst that can happen is that it fills with dust.

Mines the same way. And I even used silicone on all the joints for as much as I could reach when I was putting my system together. At the speed the dust enters the cyclone, any slight opening will allow dust in there. Shouldn't be a problem. I've not worried with mine anyway. Jim.

It is a normal occurrence that is caused by dust getting through minor gaps where the intake ramp meets the cylindrical walls of the upper section of the cyclone. For those that want to eliminate this from happening (as alrady said, it is not a real problem), just remove the top disks of MDF that holds the blower intake duct and seal around the ramp with clear silicone caulk. The only benefit is purely aesthetic.

Thanks guys...I didn't think there was a "problem", just wanted/needed confirmation:)

Good to know, I will watch for this when I go to setup my new unit soon, its ordered but not here yet. I have the instruction manual printed out and will add some notes. For a little bit of slicone I may as well keep it looking cosmetically good! Did you just seal around the ramp only or did you also seal on the top between the MDF and the top of the cyclone?

I sealed the top of the ramp which is the back side to the working part. Didn't worry with the MDF part as I wanted that to come apart a little easier. Jim.

Got my unit yesterday, started calking around the ramp last night but this morning decided it's not worth it. Would make the unit a pain to take apart if you had to. If nothing else I learned that good old isopropyl rubbing alcohol removes silicone from the PETG plastic without eating it, took some effort but cleaned it up. Some windex to finish it off made it look like new again. My unit will be in a closet so I'm not going to worry about the trapped dust.

I copied dwdrury's process detailed here:

Seems to be working very well for me so far.

That does look good, eliminates my concern as well. Lots of good ideas on DWD's gallery, I like the gaskets too. Had not made it to his gallery yet but have now, I will surely check them all out before I install anything.
