What places have you found that carried a good assortment of ell's and wye's that are close to you? Any on line dealers besides McMaster-Carr? I have one place left to try locally so far that may have what I need. I've called many plumbing houses and visited 2 of them, with out any luck. I spent about 20 minutes on the phone at work one day starting with the recommendation that one place I had visited told me to try. On the 6th call I found the other place I visited yesterday. Pipe only, no ell's or wye's and they were over twice the price that others on the net have said they paid for it.
So what kind of local retailers have you found it at and at what kind of prices? HD and Lowes here have none of the pipe, and Lowes has a few fittings. Thanks for any ideas you can give! Jim.

Same question here, but for Canada (Ottawa area preferably)...
I've been calling and E-mailing places as well, with a profound lack of success so far.

Jim, would you mind posting what regular prices should be for 6" S&D. Just so I have some reference (if I find a place that carries it).

Rob, I've heard prices on forums where the 10' section of 6" S&D was under $11.00 including tax. The only place I have found it so far, locally to me, was $23.08 plus tax. McMaster-Carr has the best price on the few fittings they stock. Their price on the 45 Wye (6-6-6) is $10.29, Lowes here locally is $18.29, and General Plastic on line was $45.30!!! If McMaster-Carr had the 22 1/5 degree ell's, the 6-6-4 and 6-4-4 wyes, they would be the place to go for the fittings. Haven't looked at their shipping prices yet, but should still be under local retail prices on the fittings. Oh, the 90 degree long radius ell at Mcmaster-Carr is $25.47. 6-6-4 wye at Lowes was $15.86 (not bad!) but I don't know how compatible it is with the S&D 2729. May work, may not. I'm just hoping someone has found a supplier on line that has decent prices on items that will work, and had a better variety of fittings. I have one more place to stop this week local to me that may have everything I want/need. At least I can hope so! Jim.

I left work an hour early and tried the other place today. He was out of pipe, but can get it (21.20 per 10' section plus tax) but doesn't carry any fittings. He gave me the name of another place that carries commercial stuff, they should have it. They had pipe, no fittings, and their computer was already off line for end of month stuff (it was 4:45 when I was there  ). They were kind enough to give me the names of 4 other places, one evidently within a rock's throw of the place I was at on Friday. Don't know why they didn't tell me about it since they didn't have what I needed. So I keep looking. Anyone else with any ideas?? Jim

Hi Jim,

$21 per 10' is a pretty good price! Cheapest I've found here sofar (after calling many, many companies) is $34 for 10' of pipe, and $19 for a wye (all 6"). The stuff is called BDS here, probably very similar to S&D in the USA.

I think I'll take a look at 26 gauge HVAC piping next. I've been hearing it's cheap and thick enough to stand up to the pressure difference. If I can find it. That's pretty much the end of the line as far as options go, next will be a decision on what to go with.

I know you're not looking for this, so just for comparison, I've also talked to the people at LaserLock (http://ductincorporated.com/) (very nice people there!). For 10' of 6" pipe they want $46, not too bad. What kills it though is the price of their wye's, at $75 each.

And so the quest continues....

There is a place in Los Angeles area called Aqua-Flo that I have check on for prices. They want 23.65 for a 10' piece of 6". a 45 is 18.74 and a wye is 36.88. Very high prices for the fittings. The pipe is priced OK. I would like to also find a good online or local source for fittings.

News Flash!!!! I Found It Locally!!!! NEWS FLASH!!!!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well, I finally found someone who knew what I was talking about. Said he was pretty much out of stock right now, as someone wiped him out yesterday. Now which one of you got to them first???
Their prices are a little steep, but if what I've been given as an estimate on shipping is true, it might just about even out. Thanks for the information. I'll let you know if MC emails me back with shipping. Jim.

McMaster-Carr wrote back, 4-45 ells, and 4-6/6/6 wyes shipping is about 10.00. I can live with that!! I'll get the pipe here locally, and order the above type items from MC, and get the 22.5 ells from the guy here I found today. (17.25 ea). I didn't ask him if he had the 6/6/4 wyes, I could use one of them, or if too expensive I'll use the 6/6/6 with a reducer. Thanks for your ideas! Jim

Where did you find your supplier? Maybe others in your area could use the contact information. Anywhere close to So. Cal?

Sorry, David. North Texas. Couldn't you tell by the accent??

Corona Plumbing Supply Co. on Tillar St. Fort Worth, TX. Anyone local need the phone number, let me know. I actually pulled them up on a web search, but then was told about them at the place I bought the pipe (Morrison Supply-18.70/10'; Corona was 23.10/10') Got to place my McMaster-Carr order tonight. Jim.

Hi Jim,

I was fortunate enough to be able to pick up all of the 6" PVC fittings and pipe here locally in the Seattle, WA area when I installed my system about 5 years ago, and also recently when I was doing some modifications.

I was helping a friend put together his system recently and we found that the prices had practically doubled in the last five years since I assembled my system, altho they were still available locally. However, he was able to purchase most of his fittings from McMaster-Carr online at a better price than currently available locally. Also, he was able to purchase some of his fittings online from Ace Hardware

with free shipping to his local Ace Hardware store.

So perhaps you might look into those sources.

Hope this helps.

Thanks a lot !!! I've been doing a lot of DC planning for a new shop, reading all of Bill Pentz' stuff, especially. I'm psyched about getting the Clear Vue, but had growing concern about the ducting installation. Specifically, about getting S&D pipe and fittings, since there didn't seem to be anyone citing a cheap source available anywhere. But I work in Fort Worth, which apparently is a hotbed of S&D supply !!!! I greatly appreciate the contact info. I hope I can get the stuff I need, now that y'all will be keeping Corona Plumbing and Morrison perpetually on backorder :)

Bill, Morrison is just south of I-30. Take Main under the RR tracks, and Vickery is the 2nd street, first street light, turn left. They are next to and just past an electrical supply house. I haven't made it to Corona yet. McMaster-Carr is by far a lot cheaper than Corona on fittings, so get what you can from MC. MC 45 degree Ell is 8.93 each, Corona quoted 14.30 ea. MC price on the 6-6-6 Wye is 10.29, Corona quoted 27.77!!!! but, Corona has the 22.5 degree Ell that MC doesn't stock. Price is 17.25, and I may check back to Lowes on that, seems like the price at Lowes...no, I found my notes, Lowes is 19.62 on the 22.5. Thank goodness I will only need 1, maybe 2 of those. We'll see when I start piecing this thing together. Hopefully this coming weekend after I get off work Sat. at 1:00. Jim.

For those of you in extreme N Texas & southern OK
I called Johnson Burks in Sherman for prices on 6" 2729 sewer pipe & fittings
Pipe $1.65/ft (flared)
SDR35 3.59/ft (gasketed)
Wyes 6" 18.07
90 deg sweep 15.44
45 deg - 9.18

Thier number is 903-892-6148 They are located at 518 E. Lamar St, East of downtowntown- across from the grain elevators on the right. They have city sales.
the local Borg's (Lowes & HD) don't have any 6" pipe, but I didn't ck on fittings.

I was out in the garage yesterday & a measuring tape and 3# (ok 39 oz) coffee can somehow got my attention (at my age that's something) I picked up each and the coffee can is almost exactly 6" in dia. <_< Wonder if I had a bunch of these - a little (maybe a lot ) solder -lots of time - how they would work for ducting?

Maybe this should be a poll?

Actually, there is a picture of said coffee can (or one like it) connected to a piece of flex, suspended on what looks like an old goosneck lamp to hold it right over the dust flow of a 6" sanding belt (the sander is in the 'lay down' position) in Beneddito's book on building an archtop guitar.

Philz, great idea!! B)
Think of all the advantages: First you get to drink coffee morning to evening for months, just to empty out enough cans. Then, every time you switch on the DC you'll get that smell of fresh coffee wafting through the shop!

Just stay away from the power tools while you're working on emptying cans (shaky hands and such)...

Thank you PhilZ for your specific information on buying 2729 S & D from Johnson Burks in Sherman, Tx. I'll be calling them right away because they apparently have some pieces the source I've located does not have.
I, like many of you, have shopped this issue smooth with much exasperation. Just recently following one referral after another I dug up a supplier very similar to the one in N. Texas. By the way a supplier told me that pipe eight feet and shorter can go UPS so we have the option of asking suppliers to cut the pipe in half and save. Then follow Bill Pentz's page on manipulating plastic pipe. The same supplier said that shipping 10' lengths in-state would run about $50 for the dozen or so sticks I need.
My source is: Salina Supply.
302 N. Sante Fe, Salina, Kansas. Phone 785-823-2221.
Nice, patient folks & willing to ship. They do not carry long radius 90's so I'm going to bend my own, buy SDR 35 since I only need two 90's or go to PhilZ's source. The prices for pipe and pieces are nearly identical to what Phil found. $1.67/ft. for 2729 pipe and similar prices for 2729 fittings.
As you all are looking for local sources for 2729...my experience was that if I asked if they carried "Sewer and Drain" they usually said yes. Then I asked if they would see what numbers were associated with S & D. Some said SDR 35, the last one said 2729. The price difference I found among the top contenders in Salina, Kansas was: 2729 glue together $1/67/ft, SDR35 glue together $2.18/ft., SDR35 w/gasket $3.43/ft. I've been unable to dig up a source of 2729 w/gasket.

Bob, all of Phills prices are good ones except the wye. McMaster-Carr has those for 10.81. I bought two 6/6/6 Wyes, and seven 45 ells and shipping was 10.00. Ordered last Saturday, shipped Monday, got them Wed. afternoon. Actually my neighbor got the package and was kind enough to wheel it over to me! Good neighbor! Delivery people dropped at wrong house, cause my wife works from home and was there all day. Company called Velocity...never heard of them before.
I tried another place today at lunch for 22 1/2 ells, but they didn't have them. They sent me on a wild goose chase for another company, but couldn't find them. Guess I'll see if the Lowes here has them like the one in Granbury does. Almost 20.00, but I want one of them this weekend.
Jim.

I bought all of my PVC ducting at a local Menards and was cheaper then any of the prices that have been mentiond. Try checking there.

Jon, as soon as Menards hits Texas, we will!!! I've heard a lot about them on several wood forums. Maybe one day they'll bigreat here. Jim

I guess I'm spoiled. I also got all my stuff at Menards and had no problems except with what I ran them out of. They got it re-ordered real fast and I'm up and running.

Phil, do you think the place in Sherman would ship? I'm going to need some of the 22 1/2 ells, and their price is pretty good. If I don't hear back from you, I'll call. Thanks! Jim

My Clear Vue is on order. I could really use some help location 6in. S&D PVC (ASTM D - 2729) pipe and fittings. My largest local plumbing supplier has nothing in stock and says he can only get pipe, elbows, and tees from his supplier in Asheville NC. I am starting to expand my search, as time permits, and will share any useful information. Anybody in the western NC or upstate SC area know of a good source?

My ClearVue went on order last weekend. I went to my local irrigation supply house and they had plenty of 6" S&D pipe and wyes, and they can order the rest. The pipe was $21 and change per 10' stick with bells. That won't do anyone else any good since I'm out here on the Left Coast, but if you can find an irrigation supply place nearby, see if they can help. Lowe's and Home Despot were not able to.

Mike,
Check with some of the other leads in this thread like McMaster Carr for fittings. For pipe I would call people who install septic systems. They have a supplier.

I ended up ordering some wyes and els along with some reducers from McMaster-Carr
I ordered 10 wyes 10 els and 5 reducers, all totaling $277.00 including $18.00 tax and $28.00 shipping.

Thanks for the suggestion about contacting the septic guys ED, it paid off. He only uses 4 in. but gave me several leads to suppliers. One of them, a plumbing supply firm has some useful fittings, can get some others, and will order 6 in. pipe to be delivered in one to two days for $1.48/ft. From what I've seen that seems to be a good price. Fittings are reasonable also. I will still have to order some fittings from McMaster-Carr but what I can get locally will help cut cost some.

If others are having trouble finding PVC maybe the septic guys lead will help. All of my cyclone component arrived in great shape the day following shipping. Thanks for the great service. If wish I could get my shop organized and complete instillation as efficiently.

Thanks, Mike C.

I received my clear vue cyclone 3 days after ordering in perfect shape as far as I can tell from looking at the pieces. I have been trying to find ducting. I live in the Maryland suburbs of D.C. and found that Ferguson Plumbing Supplies in Beltsville carries the 6" S&D pipe for around $18.50 per 10' length. They don't have many fittings and what they have is more expensive than MC. I am ordering fittings from MC today based on no negative feedback on the fit of these fittings in 2729 pipe. I am looking for 6-6-4 and 6-4-4 wyes. Has anyone found an internet source for these? Has anyone adapted metal fittings when plastic was not available. I am trying to avoid the use of adapters which would seem to me to cut effectiveness of the system. Thanks. Ken

Ken, I haven't looked for the 6-4-4, but you can get the 6-6-4 at Lowes, or at least at some of them. The ones in the smaller towns seem to have a better variety of the fittings for S&D pipe. It wasn't cheap though. Almost twice the price of MC's 6-6-6 ! Jim.
