I have just moved into a new house with a 24 x 24 garage that I am making my shop. Now that I have accepted the fact that I need a dust collection system, I have been searching for a solution. I learned much from Bill Pentz's web site and agree that I need a cyclone system.
All the layouts I have seen seem to favor the duct running at ceiling level. The vertical drops to the respective points of dust collection add length to the run, and static pressure drop.
My shop layout and building seem to work with the duct run along two walls, this seems to have the least number of turns. I drew the layout with one transition from ceiling(cyclone intake) to 24" above the floor and 6" duct running along the walls. 24" seems to be between the lowest and highest dust port on my machines.
I am still beginning to grasp the relationship between CFM, and static pressure, which seems to be critical to system operation.
I need some input!
I haven't built anything yet, only lines on my drawing pad. So, is this layout OK?
What have i failed to consider?
Also, I paln to put the cyclone in a leanto outside the shop. Do I need a filter?

Thanks for your input.

The filter question depends on where you live. You need to realize that the cyclone will exaust all of your shop air in about 5-6 minutes. If you have heat or AC to consider then you will loose it very quickly exausting the air outside. If you are in a mild climate, then exausting the air outside is the best solution.

I think most everyone goes for overhead for a couple of reasons.....1. You need to run overhead to reach anything that is in the center of your shop. 2. A 6" pipe along the wall will keep most machines out from the wall using up a lot of floor space. You didn't include a shop layout, but you can post it here so we can take a look at it.
