Just finished these up today. They are another woodworker's design, not mine.

They are fantastic. Self-cleaning, and they allow high duct placement with easy-reach access.

Those Are Really Nice along with everything else you have done. Have you tried the planer yet? Oustanding Job on Everything. :D :D :D

Thanks Matt. It's been a few weeks in the works, and finally wrapping it up feels great.

By the way, the DC is quieter than ever. I can have it on and a gate open to any machine (except the planer) and have an almost normal conversation.

I did try the planer today. It's absolutely horrible! Worse than ever. It's like being on the tarmac when a jet revs up. Of course I'm wearing muffs, but its quite ridiculous. Maybe its time to break out the minidisc and make a couple more recordings?

Congratulations, glad to see your installation is complete. I have been following your progress, it has been very helpful. I have half the piping up. There will be pictures soon, if I can figure out how to post them. Is there any drawings/info on the blast gate, I can make one like it from the photo but it would be easier with any info available. The big question. Where does the increased planer noise appear to be amplified the most, at the planer or the dc?

Regards, Guitarman

Yes Mine is loud too......EXTREMELY LOUD! IT's loud with the dust collector off and louder with it on. Guitarman I guess it has to do with the rotation of the cutting head versus the airflow.....we both modified our hoods but they are still located where the original was which is on the backside of the planer. Kinda hard to describe the noise but it sounds like the air gets cut on and off as the blades contact the wood. I am guessing that the sound level is in the 90 - 95 range without cutting and 100 -110 when cutting(will have to get sound meter and test) and as you said louder with dc on. I bet someone could hear mine from a mile away!!

All of that said I don't get any chips on the floor!! None.:D But man is it loud!

Nice blast gates. Whose design are they? Is it posted in detail anywhere?

Thanks,
Anthony

I'm using 4" sewer and drain pipe for my DC and would love to make a few of these..... Do you have a plan you would care to share?

Thanks

I don't have any plans. I basically designed these from a pic I saw on the web. They are not complex. The only critical aspects are the flanges should be an exact distance apart (I used short sections of pvc around the bolts to keep it exact)--too loose and they dont seal well, and too tight and you cant use the gate. The other one is the hole in the gate. Get you pivot point set so when the gate is shut is right in the opening. See the post as SMC for more info. Email me for more info.

I love this design by Abraham. Is there an issue with clearance leak when the duct is open. By that i mean there must be some clearance in the sliding piece so when it's open does vacuum escape through the sides or is it too busy taking the path of least resistance.
