I almost have my CV1800 setup complete. I still need to finish the filter cleanout box and make a better lid for my trash can without a tall lip around the edge for easier can removal. I'm replacing a Jet 1100 with the ClearVue.

First thing I noticed that using my hand as a gauge that the air flow is about the same as my Jet with a freshly cleaned filter. But, if I open a second gate the flow seems to be the same (with the Jet there would have been a noticeable drop in flow with two gates open). Probably my 4" hose is restricting the flow from the 6" ductwork (may need to work on this).

Second, once I attached the duct work, dust bin, and filters this cyclone isn't that much noisier than my Jet.

The CV1800 did clean out the ductwork a bit:

Note the large mass in the photo. About a month ago I noticed the smell of something dead in the garage. I even moved many of my tools out to try to find it but no luck. I have a 4" hose draped over my drill press - looks like he made it up/down the hose only once. Guess I need to put the gates closer to the end of the hose. The Jet didn't suck him up but the CV did :D .

Questions:

1) Do I need to seal the cyclone seam w/ sealant?

2) Any novel ideas for a 32 gal trash can lid or is a board with a routed groove for some foam gasket good enough?

Hi,

I trust that the impeller is spinning the correct direction(It will move air in either direction but one is weak); if that isn't the problem then as you stated it probably the 4 inch flex. I am happy to hear that you found the rat I know they stink. A board with a routed groove for some foam gasketing is good enough for a lid and the cyclone shouldn't need any caulk except where the flex hose goes on the bottom.

Looking at the impeller it rotates CCW and the impeller vanes have a slightly back-swept design rather than a forward-swept (scoop).

Matt - it was a mouse (at least I hope it was).

Sorry but two more questions:

1) How do I make sure I have no leaks on the suction side?

2) I have some 1/2" thick high eff. sound deadening material (see photo below). Where is the beast place to attach this?

Wow, that was fast. I'm still putting mine together.

Hi,

You have the rotation right. As far making sure the everything is air tight you can caulk everything and let it dry before turning the unit back on because the suction will suck the wet caulk through. Also I can hear leaks so that is how i do it but the best test will be if you notice too much fine dust in the filters which is another reason for quick access to the bottom of the filters. If you are going to make a new top with a groove to fit your can then I would just press some weather stripping into the groove. If you are going to to try to attach something to the metal lid then contact cement is a good way to attach it. Personally I am using a 55 gallon plastic container with a built in seal and a clamp which is another choice.

Well just to keep things moving I sealed the flex hose to the galvanized trash can lid. Even though I pushed the lid downward as Ed suggested I still get some pops from it when the cyclone is turned off. Guess I really do need to put a new lid on the priority list.

I fired the cyclone up after letting the sealant set. I originally posted that this thing sucked about as good as my Jet 1100 with clean filters. Boy was I wrong, I must have been half asleep, this thing flows much more than my Jet. I also seem to hear a couple of suction leaks in the ductwork that were not noticed with the Jet.

I didn't have any tools to fire up for a test but I did suck some debris out of my shop vac and threw in a couple hand fulls of bagged wood chips for our guinea pig. The heavier stuff seems to stream itself into the can right away but some of the wood chips and a few pieces of duct tape from the shop vac seemed to swirl around till I shut the cyclone off - I take it that this is normal?

The little bit of chips swirling is normal. It sounds like you have everything installed and working correctly. I wouldn't worry about the pipes leaking unless the noise bothers you as that isn't enough cfm to worry with. I am glad to hear that it's better than your jet and that's why i thought maybe the impeller was spinning backwards......it will move about as much air as the jet spinning backwards. Congrats on your install.
