Default fiber drums users?

How do like them? Better than the metal trashcan? A pain using the locking hoop? good, bad, etc... Also, where did you get yours? any local sources to Dallas/FT. Worth area?

Thanks.

Bloran,
I too live in Allen, and just received my CV1800 last week. I didn't look locally for a fiber drum, but ordered one from (cough...cough...) Oneida. I wanted something shorter than a regular trashcan. Their tech say the 35 gal measures 22" high. Penn State also has one which is 21" tall. The one I ordered from Oneida has a 7" inlet. I'll make some sort of donut for on the bottom of the cyclone, to bring it down to 6". I also ordered their IR bin sensor. We'll see how that works.
Hey, if you have a local source for 6" duct work, I'd like to hear it. I really haven't started shopping around yet, but if someone else has already done the leg work, I'm all ears.
Also, I left you a personal message to see if you want to get together, since we're practically neighbors.

Norm

Good idea about the other drum sources! Too bad its competitors (HINT HINT! Clear Vue should sell their own HINT HINT!).

I have a metal trashcan hooked up now but I am not really happy with it. Not much room to get the lid off and on and I am worried I will be replacing the gasket a lot because it is prone to peeling off.

A local source for 6" 2729 PVC pipe is John Deer Landscape. A little under $18 dollars for 10ft. I went to the one in Plano off of K ave. Lowes sells the 45s for pretty cheap (~$8). Make sure you get the thin wall though (not sc40!). I got my wyes from Mcmaster carr but did not save any money after paying shipping. Should have got those from Lowes too (~$22). I did not use any 90s.

I chose the Oneida over the Penn State for a couple of reasons. The Oneida had a metal lid, versus plastic on the Penn State. Plus by the time I paid shipping on the Penn State barrel only, it was about the same price as the Oneida, already configured with a flange, hose and clamps. With the addition of the bin sensor, my order total was just over $200, so shipping ended up being free. Can't beat that with a piece of flex duct.

By the way, they don't sell a six inch setup, that's why I went with seven. I can't see where this would have any ill effects on the operation, as long as it doesn't leak. If anyone has any different thoughts, I'd like to hear them.

Dang it, I pulled the trigger on the penn state before seeing your last response. Those are good points about the Oneida with metal lid and already set up. I grabbed the penn state thinking the plastic lid was good so I can see how full it is but it is probably going to flex like crazy.... Will have to live with it for now... I just hope it doesn't collapse it.

bloran,

Make a plywood lid if the plastic one doesn't work out.

I use a 55 gallon plastic barrel. It's bigger than the fiber drums, but the problem of getting a good fitting lid is the same. I glued two 24" by 24" by 3/4" thick pieces of plywood together and cut a 20" hole in the center to fit over the top of the barrel. This is screwed to the top of the barrel and sealed for an airtight fit. Another 24" by 24" piece of plywood with a 6" hole becomes the top cover. Add some weatherstripping and a bolt in each corner to clamp it down.

It is solid as a rock and would add some strength to the top of the fiber drum.

Good idea. Trying to picture it though... Do the screws go through the side of the drum and into the edge of the plywood?

I've got a good idea for a MDF lid and retainer, if the metal lid proves too difficult. Tough to explain here, but will share it with you when we get together.

Cool. Do you know if the Oneida and Pennstate have the same diameter fiber drum? If the diameters are the same and the lid fits both, I may get an Oneida drum too and then swap them out when one fills up. That way I won't have to empty it right away if I'm in the middle of something.

By the way, looking at the dimensions of the Pennstate (20" diameter x 21" high) it is not 35 Gal! I calculate just under 30 Gal...... Typo or creative marketing?

Yes. If the drum has a 20" outer diameter, then the plywood rings are 24" in diameter with a 20" hole. I left mine rectangular so there is extra stiffness in the corners for the bolts.
